Protection from index losses

Fixed and fixed indexed annuities credit interest without exposing the contract value to index declines. When the index falls, a fixed indexed annuity credits nothing that period — it doesn’t lose ground.

Use Cases

Four Reasons People Explore Annuities.

01Retirement income

Your Paycheck May Stop. Your Need for Income Doesn’t.

Retirement changes how you receive income. Certain annuities can help create predictable payments, including contractual income options that continue for life — and that includes money you’ve built up in a 401(k), IRA, 403(b) or TSP.

How long should income last?

Payments for a chosen number of years, then they stop. If you die before the period ends, your beneficiary receives the rest.

02Principal protection

You’ve Built Your Savings. How Much Market Risk Do You Want to Keep Taking?

Certain fixed and fixed indexed annuities provide protection against negative market-index returns under their contract terms, helping you position a portion of your savings more conservatively.

Period 1. The index rose. The contract is credited part of the rise, limited by its cap, participation rate or spread.

03Fixed-rate growth

Looking for Predictable Growth Without Daily Market Swings?

Fixed annuities and multi-year guaranteed annuities may offer declared or guaranteed interest rates over specified periods, providing alternatives worth comparing for longer-term funds.

Choose a term to see how it works

One rate, guaranteed for all 3 years

Term ends: renew, move the money, or take it

Surrender charges usually apply during the term. Available terms vary by insurer.

04Financial transitions

Retiring, Leaving a Career, or Selling a Business?

Major financial transitions raise important questions about protecting accumulated assets and generating future income. Explore whether an annuity could play an appropriate role in your next chapter.

Key Features

The Four Features Behind Every Use Case.

  • 01

    Principal Protection Features

Certain fixed and fixed indexed contracts protect against direct negative index performance, subject to contract terms and applicable adjustments.

  • 02

    Guaranteed Income Options

Some annuities provide contractual income payments for a specified period or life.

  • 03

    Interest Crediting Opportunities

Choose among available fixed-rate or index-linked crediting methods depending on contract features and objectives.

  • 04

    Tax-Deferred Accumulation

Eligible annuity contracts generally allow earnings to accumulate tax-deferred until distribution. Qualified retirement accounts already provide tax deferral.

Guarantees are backed by the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer. Annuities are not bank deposits and are not FDIC insured.

Annuity Types

Same Name. Very Different Contracts.

Each one is built for a different job. Flip any card to see what it guarantees and what to keep in mind.

01

Fixed Annuities

A declared rate

Built toavoid index losses
  • Declared rate
  • Guaranteed minimum
Initial rate periodRenewal rates

The insurer declares a rate, often for an initial period, then sets renewal rates — never below the contract’s minimum.

01

Fixed Annuities

How interest works
A rate declared by the insurer, which may reset after an initial period.
What the contract guarantees
A minimum interest rate set out in the contract.
Worth comparing when
You want steady, predictable crediting on longer-term money.

Keep in mind: Renewal rates can fall after the initial period — though never below the contract’s minimum.

02

Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities (MYGAs)

One rate, locked for a term

Built tolock in a rateavoid index losses
  • Guaranteed rate
  • End of term
Guaranteed for the full termRenew, move or take it

One rate for every year of the term. When the term ends you can renew, move the money, or take it.

02

Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities (MYGAs)

How interest works
One rate, guaranteed for the full term — commonly three to ten years.
What the contract guarantees
The stated rate for every year of the term.
Worth comparing when
You have a defined horizon and want to know the rate in advance.

Keep in mind: Leaving before the term ends usually means a surrender charge, and some contracts add a market value adjustment.

03

Fixed Indexed Annuities

Interest linked to an index

Built tooffer more interest potentialavoid index losses
  • Index change
  • Interest credited
  • Cap

Each period, interest follows the index’s change — up to the cap, and never below the floor. A falling index credits zero, not a loss.

03

Fixed Indexed Annuities

How interest works
Calculated from an index’s movement, limited by the contract’s cap, participation rate or spread. Your money is not invested in the index or the stock market.
What the contract guarantees
A floor — often 0% — so a negative index period credits no interest rather than a loss.
Worth comparing when
You want the potential for more interest than a fixed rate, and accept it may be zero in some periods.

Keep in mind: Caps, participation rates and spreads can change at renewal, and some periods may credit nothing at all.

04

Lifetime Income Options

Payments for a period or life

What the contract guarantees
Payments for a set period or for life, under the contract’s terms.
Worth comparing when
Covering essential expenses with dependable income is the priority.

Keep in mind: Annuitizing is generally irrevocable, and optional income riders usually carry an annual fee.

FAQs

Straight Answers to Common Questions.

Have a question that isn’t here? Ask it in your review.

  • What exactly is an annuity?

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. You pay a premium, either at once or over time, and in return the insurer agrees to credit interest under the contract’s terms, make income payments, or both.

It is not a bank deposit and is not FDIC insured. Its guarantees depend on the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the insurer that issues it.

  • Are annuities only for retirement?

No. Many people use them for retirement income, but they are also used to accumulate savings over a defined term or to hold a portion of savings more conservatively.

They are long-term contracts, though. Surrender charges can apply in the early years, and withdrawals of earnings before age 59½ may face an additional 10% federal tax, so they suit money you don’t expect to need soon.

  • Can I lose money with an annuity?

Fixed and fixed indexed annuities are designed so that market declines don’t reduce your contract value directly: in a fixed indexed annuity a negative index period typically credits zero rather than a loss.

You can still get back less than you put in. Surrender charges and market value adjustments can apply to early withdrawals, optional rider fees are deducted from contract value, and guarantees depend on the insurer’s ability to pay. State guaranty associations provide limited protection that varies by state. Variable annuities, which we do not focus on, can lose value with the market.

  • What’s the difference between a fixed and fixed indexed annuity?

A fixed annuity credits interest at a rate the insurer declares; a multi-year guaranteed annuity (MYGA) locks one rate for a set term. You know the rate in advance.

A fixed indexed annuity credits interest based on an external index, such as the S&P 500, limited by a cap, participation rate or spread, with a floor that protects against negative index returns. Your money is not invested in the index. Some periods may credit nothing.

  • Can an annuity provide income for life?

Yes. Income can come from annuitizing a contract or from an optional income rider on a deferred annuity. Either can be structured to pay for life, including over two lives.

The amount depends on your age, the premium, the contract and the payout option. Riders usually carry an annual fee, annuitization is generally irrevocable, and every guarantee rests on the issuing insurer.

  • Can I withdraw my money if I need it?

Usually some of it. Many contracts allow a penalty-free withdrawal each year, often up to 10% of the contract value. Withdrawals above that during the surrender period can trigger surrender charges and, in some contracts, a market value adjustment.

Some contracts waive charges for nursing-home confinement or terminal illness. Taxes, and possibly an additional 10% federal tax before 59½, apply to earnings withdrawn. Keep emergency money outside the annuity.

  • Are annuities better than CDs?

Neither is better; they are built differently. A CD is a bank deposit, FDIC insured up to applicable limits, usually for shorter terms, with interest taxed each year.

A MYGA is an insurance contract backed by the insurer rather than the FDIC. Its interest grows tax-deferred, terms are often longer, surrender charges apply to early withdrawals, and the 59½ rule applies. The useful comparison is rate, term, access, tax treatment and who stands behind the guarantee.

  • How are annuities taxed?

In an annuity bought with after-tax money, earnings grow tax-deferred. Withdrawals are generally taxed as ordinary income, earnings first; with annuitized payments, part of each payment is treated as a return of your premium.

An annuity inside an IRA or other qualified plan gets no additional tax deferral; distributions are generally fully taxable and required minimum distributions apply. Withdrawals before 59½ may face an additional 10% federal tax, with some exceptions. We do not give tax advice, so please confirm your situation with a tax professional.

  • Can I use my 401(k), IRA or TSP to buy an annuity?

Generally, yes. IRA money can move into an annuity held inside an IRA, and money in a 401(k), 403(b) or TSP can usually be rolled over once you’ve left that employer or reached an age your plan allows. A direct, trustee-to-trustee rollover generally isn’t taxed when the money moves; taking a check yourself starts a 60-day clock and can trigger withholding and taxes if it’s missed.

Inside an IRA an annuity adds no extra tax deferral — the reason to use one is the guarantee, such as income for life or protection from index losses. Payments are taxed as ordinary income and required minimum distributions still apply, though a qualifying longevity annuity contract (QLAC) can delay them on part of your balance, up to an IRS limit. Plan rules vary, and we coordinate with your tax professional.

  • What happens to my annuity when I die?

During the accumulation phase, your named beneficiaries generally receive a death benefit, typically at least the contract value, and usually without going through probate. Some contracts offer enhanced death benefits for a fee.

If the contract has been annuitized, it depends on the payout chosen: life-only payments stop, while period-certain or joint options continue. Beneficiaries owe income tax on gains they receive. Keeping beneficiary designations current matters.

  • How do I know whether an annuity makes sense for me?

Start with the job the money needs to do, when you’ll need it, what you’ll keep accessible elsewhere, your tax picture, and whether you’re comfortable with a surrender period. An annuity may suit a portion of savings; it is rarely right for all of it, and it isn’t right for everyone.

That is what the review is for. We look at your situation, compare relevant options, explain the trade-offs, and you decide — with no obligation to buy anything.
